  Menopause and Acne

Menopause is the complete shutting down of reproductive system of a human female. A woman usually enters in menopause during 45 to 55 years of age. Female reproductive system includes ovaries (endocrine glands) and uterus. Ovaries are endocrine glands that produce several hormones like progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone etc. These are called endocrine glands because their secretions or hormones immediately mix in blood or lymph nodes. Hair follicles or tiny skin pores and sebaceous glands are affected by excessive amount of progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone. Sebum is an oily substance produced by sebaceous glands to protect your skin from infection. Hormonal fluctuation by menopause triggers sebaceous glands to produce more sebum that ultimately clogs hair follicles and leads to acne breakouts.

Most women are concerned of acne breakouts when they reach menopause. Sometimes acne breakouts are severe and leave deep scars. Most of the women are unaware of this fact and use harsh cosmetics and drugs to control such acne breakouts. These harsh cosmetics further aggravates the symptoms. Using only topical remedies or cosmetics is not the proper solution for treating menopausal acne unless you change your entire life style. Menopause brings about a number of changes in your body that are manifested in various ways such as your mood swings, acne, wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity etc. Most of your skin features are controlled by hormones produced by your ovaries. Ovaries also produces testosterone that after menopause is secreted in a very small amount.

Fluctuation in the production of progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone stimulates sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. When excessive sebum is produced and hair follicles are inflamed, it blocks hair follicles. Clogged hair follicles produces small bumps called whiteheads. Whiteheads are non-infected lesions. But if whiteheads are left untreated, they form blackheads, pimples, papules and pustules. They are the most severe forms of acne. Therefore, the root cause is the menopause that created hormonal fluctuation and hormones later stimulated endocrine system to produce excessive sebum.

How you can get rid of menopausal acne?
Treating menopausal acne is a difficult task as there involves your body's hormonal system that you can not easily control. If it is controlled for instance, production of hormones are suppressed or increased, it may cause side effects and your entire body will be affected. However, you can control fluctuation in hormones just by taking healthy vitamin rich foods. Using cleanser, scrubs, exfoliators and herbal skin care tonics is also an ideal solution for treating menopausal acne. These topical remedies will keep your skin clean and clear. Exfoliators are used to remove excessive sebum, sloughed off dead skin cells and bacteria. As your body may secret more sebum after menopause, do use suitable cleanser or exfoliator.
